Expert Advice: Beyond Beauty Tips

kate_expert_advice.jpg I noticed that my complexion improved when I began taking birth control. Is there a link?
-Harriet

Kate responds

Yes, some birth control pills have been clinically proven to treat moderate acne. For more specific information you should consult your healthcare professional.

How can I maintain radiant skin despite the heat?
-Cara

Kate responds

Skin needs a little extra pampering in summer. Make sure to wash your face with a gentle cleanser followed by a mild toner. A light toner will help shrink your pores and keep skin feeling and looking refreshed.

Should I switch the face lotion I use in summer?
-Samantha

Kate responds

Yes, be sure that your moisturizer contains SPF. This will protect your face from the damaging rays that cause wrinkles and pesky fine lines. Look for something lightweight and non-greasy that will hydrate and protect skin all day long.

Hi Kate! I am in my early 30’s and have started to notice more uneven skin tone and red/sun spots on my face. I don’t like to wear heavy foundation but hate how my skin looks so ruddy all the time. What are your thoughts and suggestions?
- Brande

Kate Responds

You’ll want to look for cleansing products and moisturizers that soothe your skin – scope out the label for natural ingredients and anti-oxidants.
I also love the at-home treatment of boiling a pot of chamomile teat, let set to cool, soak a cotton ball in the tea and then rub over your face as an at-home toner once a week.

I like the bright effect a white eye shadow applied in the corner of your eye gives you. However, is that too young a look once you’re over 30?
- Athena

Kate Responds

For a look that’s a bit more grown up but still bright, swap the white shadow for a hint of pale gold sparkle. It instantly updates your look while still keeping eyes bright.

My question is how do you remove makeup without damaging the delicate tissue around your eyes?
- Haley

Kate Responds

Oil-based cream eye makeup remover is best for the sensitive skin around eyes. I like Mario Badescu’s Eye Makeup Remover Cream.. Make sure to apply cleanser with a cotton ball or pad and hold cleanser on eye for a few seconds to allow product to absorb. Wipe clean and finish with an eye cream after cleansing the entire face.

I’m getting married in a few weeks and I’m worried that I’ll look washed out in pictures. Do you have any makeup tips to help me look radiant on the big day?
-Kay

Kate Responds

Congratulations Kay! You’ll want to choose colors that are a bit bolder than you usually wear for the big day. Foundation is key to making sure that you don’t look washed out. I suggest going to a makeup counter a few weeks before the wedding for a professional consultation (you’re not obligated to buy anything but you’ll get some great ideas). Bring a friend and a camera to snap some test shots to see what works!

I’d like my eye color to pop more – any suggestions (they’re blue)?
-Brianna

Kate Responds

The best way to accentuate your eye color is to use shadows that contrast to the color of your eyes. Brown shadow is great for blue eyes, slate for brown.

I want fuller lips (but not the scary kind some of the stars are sporting these days).
-Caitlyn

Kate Responds

There are lots of great products on the market that can give you a natural looking full lip. Try Full Out Pout (available at Sephora) or Very Voluptous Lip Plumper Extreme (available at Victoria’s Secret).

Hi Kate! I haven’t been to the beach all summer, my skin is so white I’m afraid I’m blending in with my cubicle walls. I’d like to try a professional spray on tan but I’m afraid. What do you think?
-Dana

Kate Responds

Hey Dana – your skin will thank you in 20 years for avoiding the sun. For a sun-kissed look without the damage causing rays, a salon spray on tan is great. You don’t have to worry about streaking or hard to reach places when a technician is performing the service for you. Bliss is my favorite spa for achieving a “faux glow.”
